When the Real Product Innovation Is in the Packaging

Psychologie des Verpackungsdesigns | Warum Aufmerksamkeit allein nicht verkauft

When people think about innovation, they usually think about new recipes, ingredients or flavours. But some of the most successful innovations don't lie in the product itself — they lie in its packaging. Packaging innovation is a competitive advantage that is systematically underestimated.

Four Examples of Packaging That Reinvented a Product:

👉 CALIPPO: Ice lollies already existed. But they dripped and made a mess. Calippo by The Magnum Ice Cream Company fundamentally changed the way we eat ice lollies through an innovative packaging format — and in doing so, created an entirely new category experience.

👉 HEINZ KETCHUP: Ketchup already existed. Thanks to the upside-down squeeze bottle introduced by Kraft Heinz in 2002, getting the last drop out became effortless. A simple packaging innovation — with a significant impact on product usability and brand perception.

👉 HONEY DEPARTMENT: Honey already existed. But sticky jars are frustrating. Honey Department solved the usability problem with a tube format — easier to dose, easier to handle, and a strong differentiator on shelf.

👉 GRAZA: Olive oil already existed. Graza transformed the pouring experience with a squeeze bottle and a small precision opening. The packaging format has become one of the brand's strongest Distinctive Brand Assets.

What These Packaging Innovations Have in Common

All four examples share three characteristics:

💡 They were unusual for their category at launch — which generated immediate attention.

💡 They became strong recognition markers for their respective brands.

💡 And they solve a real usability problem. Not a constructed added value, but a tangible everyday benefit.

The Takeaway:

Good packaging protects a product. The truly great ones go further — they solve a usability problem and become an innovation in their own right. Before developing a new product, it's worth asking: what problem does the consumer have when using this product — and could smarter packaging solve it?

That is sometimes more innovative than the next new flavour.
